Tesco – largest retailer in Slovakia in 2009

Billa were the largest retail chains operating in Slovakia in 2009, according to the study
Top 10 Retail Slovakia produced by the research agency Terno.
The largest retailer, Tesco, generated revenues of €1.14bn in 2009 – a 15% year-on-year decline. It was followed by Metro Cash & Carry with revenues of €461m and Billa with €440m.
In 2009 the ten largest retailers operating on the Slovak market saw a decline in their combined turnover of 11.9% year on year. The decline follows the period 2006-2008, during which the top 10 retailers registered significant turnover growth.
The sharpest drops in revenue – those of between 25% and 30% - were reported by the electronics retailer
Nay, the DIY chain
bauMax and Metro Cash & Carry. The smallest declines – those of between 5% and 8% – were reported by Billa,
Kaufland and
Lidl.
