In November 2009 retail sales in Hungary amounted to HUF 617.5bn (€2.3bn), falling 3.7% in current prices compared to October. During the period January-November 2009, retail sales amounted to HUF 6,524bn (€24bn), according to the latest data released by the Hungarian Statistical Office (KSH).
In terms of volume, retail sales have been falling month on month since February 2007. In November, sales were down by a sizable 7.8% year on year. The decline in retail sales volume has been accelerating since July 2009, when it fell 6.6% year on year. This was followed by year-on-year declines of 7.3% in both August and September, and a 7.5% decline in October.
The volume of food sales fell by 6.6% in November year on year, while non-food sales were down 11.1% compared to the same month in 2008. Sales of industrial products, furniture, household appliances and construction materials experienced the most significant decline during the period November 2008-November 2009.
