Lidl to enter Romania
2010-02-09
Lidl, one of the largest discounter retailers in Europe, plans to enter Romania this year. The retailer wants to open stores in more than 20 Romanian cities and has already acquired land for this purpose. The first Lidl store is planned to be opened in Bucharest. The discounter targets cities with more than 30,000 inhabitants. Each store will require an investment of €1.5-2m and will employ 25-30 people.
This year, Lidl will start the construction of an office building and a logistics centre in Chiajna, Ilfov County.
Lidl’s main competitors on the Romanian discount retail market will be
Penny Market (with 91 stores in Romania and revenues of €373.6m in 2008) and
Plus Discount (96 stores and revenues of €227.2m in 2008).
Lidl & Schwarz Co & KG, the retail group and owner of Lidl, is present on the
Romanian retail market through its
Kaufland chain of supermarkets.
In 2009 just under one-quarter (22%) of Romanians shopped in a discount store regularly, up from 17% in 2008, according to GfK data.
