Cheap wine sales in Romania have positive prospects
2010-02-23
In 2009, low-price wines were selling best in Romania as a result of the shift of consumers from the medium- to the low-price segment.
In 2010, the consumption in the low-price sector of wines will focus on even cheaper products, the medium-price segment will see consolidation, while the upscale sector, comprising premium and luxury wine products will see an increase of sales, according to the Romanian wine retailer
Vinexpert.
Last year, sales of Romanian wines decreased by up to 10% against 2008 in terms of both volume and value, according to the Association of National Vineyards Owners and Wine Makers (PNVV). The growth was due to meteorological conditions favourable to vineyard harvest. The Romanian wine market in terms of volume was estimated at 6 million hectolitres in 2009, of which only up to 1.5 million hl came through “official” producers. The remainder was represented by wine production of individual households for their own use and illegal sales by individual producers. Sales of imported wines accounted for less than 5% of the market.
Domestic wine makers sell about 23% of their production through modern retail formats, according to MEMRB.
The main wine manufacturers in Romania are
Murfatlar,
Vincon Vrancea,
Cotnari,
Halewood,
Jidvei and
Domeniile Tohani.
