The government subsidy granted for smaller pharmacies has been abolished, and as a result up to 400 of them might be forced to close down, Vilaggazdasag reported.
Earlier, 600-700 small chemists received a monthly no-return subsidy of HUF 50,000-150,000 (€185-555) in order to secure access to medicines even in small settlements, Tamas Horvath of the Hungarian Chamber of Chemists told the daily. With the subsidy gone, from 2010 on they can only count on support from a HUF 200m (€739,100) solidarity fund collected from high-turnover units.
According to the business daily, 412 new pharmacies have appeared in Hungary since 2006, while the number of prescriptions has remained unchanged at about 150 million.
