In April 2010 Swedspan, a company which belongs to the Ikea group, will begin construction of a wood panel plant in Orla commune, in the Podlaskie voivodship. During the first stage the company will build a timber yard and a plant which will produce HDF panels, and the second stage will involve the construction of a wooden chair factory. The project is thought to be worth €340m.
It is believed, that the new Ikea factory could change the balance of power among the producers of wood boards. Ikea’s two main suppliers, Krono and Pfleiderer Grajewo, might lose contracts, and the new Ikea plant will rival other wood panel producers in Poland.
Swedspan has been gradually expanding – at present, the company manages three panel factories in Lithuania, Sweden and Slovakia, with a total annual production capacity of 1.5 million m³ of hard fibre boards. Furthermore, the company intends to acquire a plant in France belonging to Sonae Industries, a Portuguese producer, and to expand its Lithuania factory.
