Tesco Slovakia launches campaign to support local suppliers
2010-03-02
The retail chain Tesco plans to run a campaign promoting Slovak-made products sold in its outlets. The campaign, which would highlight local products in Tesco stores by using a “Produced in Slovakia. We are proud of it” label, is aimed at supporting Tesco’s 800 Slovak suppliers. The company plans also to present business opportunities to other Slovak suppliers, a move aimed at forging cooperation with more regional suppliers in the country.
The pilot of the campaign has been launched in Tesco’s hypermarket in Zlate Piesky. The company also displayed billboards advertising foodstuffs of Slovak origin in the store.
According to an informal survey carried out by Tesco in its Zlate Piesky hypermarket, some 17% of respondents said that the campaign influenced their choice. Moreover, the majority of respondents said that they prefer food of Slovak origin, in particular when it comes to local cheese, sausages, dumplings and selected kinds of sweets.
Tesco entered the Slovak market in 1996 and, at present, operates 49 hypermarkets, 21 supermarkets and five Tesco Express outlets. In addition, the retailer owns 16 petrol stations in the country. The company employs over 8,300 people in Slovakia.
