The Slovak anti-trust watchdog has approved the acquisition of the mail-order retailer Quelle Slovenska Republika by the Swedish holding Consortio Invest. The Swedish entity is also the owner of the Halens, the company under which Quelle will continue to operate in Slovakia. The anti-trust office has concluded that the deal will not lead to the company establishing an unhealthily dominant position on the local retail market.
The transaction was announced in mid-January 2010. It included the acquisition of Quelle’s operations in the Czech Republic, Poland and the Baltic countries by Halens. It did not, however, include the rights to use the Quelle brand and the rights to this in the countries in question were sold separately to Otto Group.
Halens was founded in 1949 and today, operates in seven countries under the Halens, Cellbes and Bubleroom brands. The company has an annual turnover of €120m and a workforce numbering approximately 300.
