Hungary retail sales drop slows to 7.4% in December

In December 2009 retail sales at current prices totalled HUF 753bn (€2.8bn) in Hungary, up from HUF 617.5bn (€2.3bn) in November. For the whole year, retail sales amounted to HUF 7,279bn (€27bn), down from HUF 7,558bn (€27.8bn) in 2008, according to data released by Hungary’s Central Statistical Office (KSH).
Food sales fell 3.8% in December compared to the same month one year earlier. For the whole of 2009, the year-on-year decline amounted to 3.9%. Non-food sales were down by 12.7% year on year in December while the overall annual decline was 8.7%.
Retail sales volume continued to decline in December 2009, by 7.4% year on year. This was, however, lower than the 7.8% decline reported in November. In a month-on-month comparison, retail sales improved slightly, falling by 0.7% in December compared to a 0.8% decline in November.
