Pepsi and Coca-Cola see sales decline in 2009

The two largest soft drink producers in Romania,
Pepsi Americas and
Coca-Cola Hellenic, saw their sales – in both value and volume terms – decline by more than 10% compared to the previous year.
Coca-Cola Hellenic registered sales revenues of €500m in Romania, down from €550m achieved one year earlier. The company also observed a 12% year-on-year decline in sales volume.
Its main competitor on the market, Pepsi Americas, recorded revenues of €180m in 2009 – down from €202m in 2008. The company also saw its volume sold drop 10% in comparison with the previous year.
In volume terms, the Romanian sparkling soft drinks market contracted by 16% year on year in 2009, according to data from MEMRB. This followed two consecutive years of sales volume growth of between 5% and 10%. Together, Pepsi and Coca-Cola account for approximately 75% of total sales on the Romanian soft drinks market.
