In the financial year 2008/2009 (ending in February 2009) the discounter chain Lidl posted a profit for its operations in the Czech Republic for the first time in several years. During the period in question, the company’s net profit amounted to CZK 906m (€35.4m). For the sake of comparison, in the previous financial year Lidl reported losses of CZK 52.5m (€2m), according to Hospodarske Noviny.
Last year, Lidl generated sales revenues of CZK 18.9bn (€737m) – an increase of 12% over the previous year.
Lidl established retail operations in the Czech Republic in 2003. In 2009 the company launched ten new stores in the country and, as of January 2010, operates a total of 210 stores there.
