Pini Polonia, the Kutno-based meat producer which belongs to Bresaole Pini, an Italian group, intends to launch a production plant in March 2010, according to a report in Parkiet. This will be the largest slaughterhouse on the Polish market, processing at least 6,000 carcasses every day. The project is thought to be worth PLN 100m (€25m).
The new factory has a chance to rival PKM Duda, the largest Polish meat producer. The latter company has recently been facing serious financial difficulties, and the appearance of a new competitor could further compromise the position of the Polish firm. Other meat producers could also be in jeopardy, as the supply of livestock is relatively low on the Polish market and competition for this could, therefore, exacerbate the situation.
Witold Choinski, the chairman of the Polish Meat Association (ZPM), suggests that the appearance of a new market player could speed up consolidation on the meat market. Ninety meat producers operating in Poland declared themselves bankrupt in 2009 and 17 manufacturers filed for bankruptcy, according to the data of Dun & Bradstreet. In 2010, there could be twice as many insolvencies as in 2009.
