Danone Romania outperformed Friesland in sales last year

Danone Romania, a subsidiary of the French dairy-products producer, Danone, has become the largest player on
Romania’s dairy market in terms of sales revenues after last year outperforming
FrieslandCampina, the holder of top position on the market for the last five years.
Danone Romania posted sales revenues of RON 434.6m (€102.5m) in 2009, an increase of 2.8% compared to the previous year when calculated in local currency, according to Trade Registry. However, when calculated in euros, Danone’s sales revenues was down 10.7% year on year. The company generated a net profit of RON 27.2m (€6.4m), down by 13.8% in local currency and 24.7% in euro compared to the previous year.
By way of comparison, in 2009 FrieslandCampina Romania registered sales revenues of about €100m, down 20% from the 2008 figure.
Danone Romania employs over 700 people and has only one production unit in Bucharest. FrieslandCampina has four factories in the Mures, Satu Mare and Cluj (one in Taga and Baciu each) counties. At the end of 2008 the company’s workforce numbered approximately 1,600. The Romanian dairy market is estimated to be worth €1.1bn.
