Price of raw milk in Slovakia went down significantly in 2009
2010-06-22
The purchase price of raw milk in Slovakia has declined since January 2008, when it stood at €39.17/100 litres, to half of that value in June 2009. The decline led to massive losses in the milk manufacturing industry in Slovakia in 2009. The losses hover around €85m for the entire milk production sector in the country in 2009, according to estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture.
This situation also forced milk producers to cut down on the production of milk, which is estimated to have gone down by 10% from January 2008 to June 2009.
Between 2004 and 2009, the milk production in Slovakia declined from 1.08 billion litres to some 957 million litres in 2009, according to information from the Ministry.
