2010-06-29
Small breweries in Romania, which together control less than 10% of beer sales in the country, down from 30% five years ago, have been recently producing an increasing number of private beer labels for retail chains such as Carrefour, Metro Cash & Carry and Mega Image in order to stay on the market Albrau Grup, manufacturer of the beer brands Albrau and Zimbru, produces beer in plastic bottles for Metro, Carrefour and Mega Image, and private beer labels for the store chains Penny Market and Plus. Martens Galati, with sales revenues of €4m in 2009, manufactures private beer brands such as Winny for Cora supermarket and Steiner for the chain miniMax Discount.
In 2009 the Romanian beer market registered a decrease of more than 13% in volume compared to the previous year, or almost 300 million liters. The sales of private brands in Romania annually generate about €800m, which represents some 10% of the sales of foodstuffs in the modern retail channel in the country.
