The year-on-year decline in the retail sales in Slovakia slowed down in May 2010, according to Slovak Statistical Office. In the fifth month of the year, the Slovak retail sales in constant prices went down by 5.4% against the same month of 2009.
The retail sales went down in May 2010 in almost all categories. The strongest segment, the retail sales in non-specialised stores, registered a yearly decrease of 0.2% to €599.2m. The retail sales in specialised shops saw a dive of 10.3% against May 2009. The steepest decline was recorded in May 2010 by the retail sales in open markets, 22.4% year on year.
The retail sales in Slovakia saw a month-on-month increase of 0.9%, according to data from UniCredit Bank, which does not foresee a return of the retail sales in the country to healthy growth in 2010 in the context of high unemployment.
