At the end of July 2010, Metro Cash & Carry Romania wants to open a new Metro Punct store in the city of Piatra-Neamt, according to market insiders. Metro Punct is a chain of small-size outlets that exclusively targets retail vendors. The first Metro Punct outlet was opened in Satu Mare at the end of April 2010. The store has an area of 2,000 m² and sells about 3,000 foodstuffs and non-food products.
In 2009 Metro in Romania posted a consolidated sales revenues of €1.89bn, a drop of 10.7% compared to 2008, mostly as a result of the depreciation of the national currency and a decline in consumption. Over the period, Metro’s wholesale division Metro Cash & Carry had sales revenues of €1.22bn while Real, the hypermarket chain and registered sales of €671m.
