Philips is expanding its operations in Hungary with manufacture of 3D LCD television sets in its Szekesfehervar factory and the production of LED lighting fixtures in its Tamasi plant, Benedikt Laux, Philips CEE regional manager told Vilaggazdasag.
Production of the TV sets will add to the Szekesfehervar factory’s existing capacity. The factory currently makes entertainment electronics, electric shavers and vacuum cleaners, though it is possible the factory may manufacture other household appliances in the future, Mr. Laux added. The Szekesfehervar plant was set up in 1997; in 2001 it functioned as a regional distribution centre for Philips plants located in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region.
On the contrary, it is unlikely that the capacity of the Tamasi plant will be expanded by products other than LED lighting fixtures. This factory produces mainly office lighting and public lighting for interiors. The same products are also made in Philips facilities in Poland and Romania, whose markets for such products are bigger than that in Hungary. Moreover, Polish and Romanian construction markets were not as affected by the crisis as was the Hungarian construction market, according to Mr. Laux.
