It is expected that the production of wine in Slovakia will decrease this year as a result of bad weather in previous months which caused a decline in the harvest of grapes.
The quality of the grapes has also suffered because of the weather, which is expected to have a negative impact on the quality of wine.
Therefore the grape harvest is expected this year to be 15-20% lower than in 2009, according to forecasts from the Association of Winemakers in Slovakia. The situation can be improved only if the weather in August and September remains hot, according to the same source. If the weather again worsens, the decline in the harvest of grapes can go down year on year by as much as 30%, the Association representatives said.
The yearly consumption of wine in Slovakia is hovering around 6 million litres. Some 60% of it is, however, low-priced imported wine.
