Shopping centres development in the Czech Republic and Slovakia over the next three years - October 2011

At the end of 2010, there were 63 shopping centres (those greater than 10,000 m²) operating in the largest cities of the Czech Republic. In turn, Slovakia had 32 shopping centres with a GLA of more than 10,000 m² in operation at the end of 2010. The last two years turned out to be the most productive for shopping centre development in Slovakia, supplying the market with nearly 300,000 m² of GLA. Though the number of shopping centres and GLA remains higher in the Czech Republic, Slovakia is expected to develop in this field faster and to overtake the Czech Republic in the near future in terms of GLA per 1,000 inhabitants even in 2011, according to the recent report Shopping centres in Central Europe in 2011 published by PMR.

In Slovakia, the most GLA-saturated cities as of 2010 included: Zilina, where GLA per 1,000 inhabitants exceeded 1,000 m², as well as Bratislava (816 m²), followed by Nitra and Trencin The capital, Bratislava, has a population of only 430,000, and Kosice, the second city in Slovakia, has 234,000 inhabitants. Both still have the potential to host additional GLA within their borders.
